Irish Times writeup

Whip out page six of the Business section of today’s Irish Times folks, and you’ll find a lovely article about Auctomatic. For those of us who aren’t subscribers (why do the Irish Times do this? Beats me.), Patrick’s posted a screenshot here.

Just curious if it was difficult to get into a “local” paper, and how much benefit you saw online (early signups on your website, or whatever)? Do you think traditional media is useful for startup press? (I’m sort of our PR guy.)

A blogger called Damien Mulley (mulley.net) put us in contact with a guy at the Irish Times, who seemed pretty happy to write about us. I think traditional media can be underestimated for a site - the ones who do vist are more interested (they’ve gone to the effort) and will stay around longer than your average TechCrunch user :)

It all depends on the market and country. For Ireland the press are stil wary about tech since the last bubble but more business style papers cover tech a bit more. For Ireland it is hard to get into the papers unless your company is making x millions and employs y dozen people. However, a print story will get you far more attention than that of a website. Paper still rules in Ireland. You’d find too a mention in one paper will have other papers ring you to do the story too as well as radio stations. In the states I would think a mention on a site like Techcrunch would get the attention of a lot more people in the tech business than a print pub. Though it is still nice to get mentioned in the NYT or WSJ
